Pecos National Historical Park
Pecos National Historical Park (New Mexico)
Pecos encompasses thousands of acres situated about 30 minutes southwest of Santa Fe, rich in history and culture. There are two entrances. At the more southern, you’ll see Pueblo ruins from one of the most powerful villages in the region with evidence of inhabitation dating back to BC times. You’ll also see a Spanish Mission church foundation from 1619. Make sure to start in the visitor center so you can check out the 10 minute video and the museum. You can (and should) leave the visitor center here with a $2 trail guide and set out on the 1.25 mile walking path called the Ancestral trail. Just a few miles north at the second entrance lies Glorieta Pass which was a gateway between the Great Plains and the Rio Grande valley. Control of the Pass meant control of migration and trade. This was also the site of a Civil War battle in 1862. The two hiking trails here are the Glorieta Battlefield trail at 2.25 miles and the South pasture loop trail at 3.8 miles of old ranch road with expansive views. This NPS site offers free parking and free entry. Make sure to stamp out your NPS Passport while you’re here! Make note, there is really no food on site, and take plenty of water as the elevation and heat can sure take their toll if you aren’t prepared.
