RV Security

Lights, locks, and cameras! Oh my! Let’s be honest, it’s easy to go on about this topic for all too long, so let’s start here: What are your realistic goals, for your unique situation? Once you have a feel for what you want to accomplish, you can narrow down what systems can meet your needs. For us, it boiled down to two main camps: SimpliSafe and Ring. Either one would have met most of our needs, but we ended up going with Ring because we liked the outdoor cameras better and we could get a listener for our current carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, instead of having to replace them all. Now that your brain is starting to twirl over this topic, let’s take a peek at a few considerations and questions to start asking yourself…

Outdoor monitoring

  • Cameras

    • How will you mount and power them?

    • What about night-vision capabilities?

    • Do you want motion notifications, or 24/7 recording?

    • Ask how long recorded footage is stored, and how to access it.

  • Do you want/need lights?

  • Bay door open sensors can also help notify you if there’s an issue while in motion.

Indoor

  • Smoke detectors: Will they just go off, or will you get notified?

  • Carbon monoxide detectors

  • Propane leak detectors

  • Water sensors (basement, beneath sinks, by the clothes washer)

  • Glass break sensors

  • Doors

  • Locks

    • We installed a keypad for keyless entry, which is not associated with our Ring system, but we still really like it.

Temperature Control

  • Freeze warnings

  • Indoor pet needs

    • For both temperature and power loss notifications. We use Govee sensors for temperature and our Ring system alerts us to power loss events.

Monitoring considerations

  • Do you have/need reliable Wifi?

  • Does changing locations affect your options?

  • Notifications: text, push, emails, phone calls…

  • Professional monitoring vs self-monitoring

  • Does it link to your smart phone for alerts and to arm/disarm? The last thing your campsite neighbors (or your pets) want is an alarm going off for hours on end!

  • Wired vs wireless installation

  • Self installation vs professional installation

  • If you have a base station, where does it go, and how is it powered?
