Bandelier National Monument

Bandelier National Monument (New Mexico)

Here you can see dwellings carved into cliff sides (cavates), petroglyphs, and masonry that still stands from pueblo buildings and kivas. These are visual reminders that this land has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years, but also remember the culture is still very much alive in the local people today. Make sure to check the NPS website for verification, but May through October, you’ll need to start your trek at the White Rock Visitor Center. From here, you’ll take a free shuttle up to the monument’s visitor center. The shuttle runs about every 30 minutes, and you’ll still need to pay the regular NPS fees upon arrival. The 1.4 mile Main Loop trail starts at the visitor center. We always pay for the $2 trail guide in the shop, as we find it really enriches our experience and understanding. If you have the time, continue on the trail to the Alcove house for an additional one mile (round trip), which leads you to a steep 140-foot climb up four wooden ladders then some stone stairs, but seeing the ceremonial cave and imagining how important this place was to ancient people is something you’re not soon to forget. As you make your way back to the visitor center, stop into the café and get a burger. We split the New Mexico burger which had green chiles, onions, and cheese, and we agreed it was delicious!
