RV Black Tank Maintenance
It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it! It’s time to talk about RV black tanks.
What is a black tank? It’s the thing that lets you have a working toilet in your RV! (*unless you have a cassette toilet). Black tanks hold waste from the toilet until it can be dumped into an appropriate receptacle or system. That, friends, is a very important convenience that we want to keep functioning smoothly. Mishaps in this department are sure to make for a bad day.
Now, we won’t go into the specifics of emptying or flushing your system, or what equipment you need. Those topics are covered extensively by other blogs and videos, and it can get complex quickly. Instead we will focus on maintaining a healthy, functioning system, preventing clogs, combatting odor, and avoiding damage to your tank. These are the things we might tend to take for granted when they function well.
TIPS
1. Unless you are actively flushing or emptying your system, leave your valves CLOSED.
2. After you flush or empty your black tank and have your valves closed again, add 1-5 gallons of regular water, through your toilet. This is your first step in avoiding that dreadful Poo-Pyramid situation.
3. Adding maintenance chemicals is like having stomach acid to help “digest” the contents of your tank, keep it liquid form, and reduce odor.
4. We also personally recommend professional tank cleaning services every 6-12 months.
